The era of automation in the packaging industry began about 20 years ago, when fully mechanical carton  machine was equipped with a programmable logic controller (PLC) for controlling logical functions and the mechanical power shaft of the driver. However, the flexibility of this generation of automation machine is not satisfactory. In the later development of modern automation machine, more and more functions were transferred from mechanical power shafts to electronic drive systems, while logical functions were still controlled by PLC systems. The logic functions previously performed by PLC are losing their importance, and now the electronic motion function is taking advantage. With the increasing demand for machine flexibility, the number of servo motors is also increasing. This means that due to different programming languages and systems, physical and logical interfaces are no longer needed. Since the mid-1990s, some companies have driven the trend of integrating motion control and logic control solutions in the field of carton packaging machinery.
